Money and alternatives

http://www.themoneyfix.org/

While in Iowa (more on that later, hopefully...) I watched this movie with Lauren in one of her classes. It is really quite good. The idea of a mutual credit system is pretty cool. Tough to get started and tough to make work, but if you got it right, it would be wicked sweet.

I am going to try to learn more.

Trouble Sleeping

Somehow my sleep cycle has become severely garfunkled (aka: garbled). Hence, it is 1:00 am and I just finished washing the dishes while listening to Phantom of the Opera. Not a bad thing to do, in and of itself, but I wish I was asleep and had finished washing/phantoming around 10:30 or so. Oh well.

Thrift vs. Health, a food dilema

I have always tried to be smart with my money. Food is a place that this is tough. I really like food and I like buying expensive ingredients to make yummy food to eat. This is costly.
Through Jungle Quest, I now have a membership to Sam's club, which means more food for less money. I did a price comparison survey (for incomplete) and found a remarkable difference in the price of food at Publix (grocery store) vs. Sams/BJs (wholesalers). Many items cost 40% less at the Wholesalers vs. the same food at Publix. This is a good thing when it comes to being thrifty.

Then comes the other half of the equation. Lauren likes for me to eat healthy and in an environmentally conscious manner. I like to eat healthy and in an environmentally conscious manner. However, organic, locally grown foods from Whole Foods and Native Sun are expensive, in contradiction to my attempts at cheapness.

Maybe these two things can help each other out. If I am careful, I can buy some food at Sam's for cheap and in bulk while also buying nice organic veggies from Native Sun. This gives me a sort of "average" cost, while getting me the better healthy food. If I am careful about which of the foods from Sam's I buy, I can try to get foods that are still "ok" for me (not necessarily good, but not definitely bad) and keep my healthiness level higher than it has been in the past, without destroying my budget.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Karaoke

I just got back from an interesting karaoke experience.

The place was interesting, you basically rented your own little room with seating for probably 15 people and a full karaoke setup. Kind of fun.

Highlights were figuring out that I could change the tempo and key of songs by pressing buttons and singing "Puff the Magic Dragon," b/c I had been trying to remember the words from a long time ago.

BAH SHMAH!!!!!!

I just got a speeding ticket. Stinking Jacksonville with all its construction. Apparently a 6 lane divided highway is a good place for a 35 mph speed limit.

Among the things I would like to spend 270 dollars on, a traffic citation is not near the top of the list.

Frustrating.

I wasn't around when they made this, but it is better than anything else on the web at the moment.

Apparently this is a startup north florida guide

That is using us as one of their first promotionals.

Kind of cool.

Lauren tells me my blog is boring and that I need to blog more about life. Fortunately, yesterday provided an excellent opportunity for just such ramblings.

Yesterday started fairly normally. At about 11:30, I was looking on Craigslists for a used bike. I spotted a TANDEM bike for real cheap and got very excited. I shot off an email, heard back, Lauren and I got ready to go fast and we took off. Unfortunately, the bike was on a first come basis, and it sold before we got there. Very sad. A tandem bike would have been fun. On top of that, we had already driven most of the way across town to try to get it, now for nothing.

But, we didn't want the trip to be a waste, so we headed to the beach, since we were on that side of town. Beach was going ok, Lauren was trying to teach me how to swim, and I noticed some movement out in the water. Pretty soon the movement was identifiable as dolphins, probably 6-10 of them, playing in the water. They were a ways off, but you could definitely see them, and they got really excited for a short while and a few jumped full body out of the water. It was pretty cool.

On the way home we stopped by black creek outfitters, local equivalent to REI/Lewis and Clark. They have paddleboards at B.C. and a friend from ultimate who works there suggested we should try them out. So we stopped and tried out paddleboards. Surprisingly, I can stand up on a paddleboard without feeling like I am near death. They were pretty fun and, if I had a bunch of money laying around with nothing to do, I might buy one. But, I don't, so I probably won't.

When we made it home we decided to go to the mailbox. Normally this is an enjoyable little walk, but nothint too spectacular. However, today we happened to spot a lizard on the way and stopped to say hello. Not just any lizard...most lizards you can't really interact with too much b/c they are very fast and are gone before you get out a proper greeting. This guy was fast too, but also itty bitty teeny tiny, so his fast didn't get him as far. We played with him a bit, then walked on to the mailbox, dissappointed that we didn't have a camera to capture the little fellow. We got our mail (nothing exciting) and were on the way back when we spotted him again. In a flash of brilliance, Lauren realized that one of us could...GO AND GET A CAMERA!! (We are pretty bright sometimes). I did so and the pictures below (if I figure out how to post them properly) are the result. He is a very little lizard.

Yup. That was yesterday.

Cash for Clunkers...do I like it or not?

I was searching for a new mode of vehicular transportation recently, hoping to replace the wagon with something smaller. The search is off, for the moment, but I did learn about a new program that I am trying to decide if I like or not. It is being called the "Cash for Clunkers" program, officially the Car Allowance Rebate System (acronym CARS...isn't the government clever?) You can read about it here: www.cars.gov

The basics are, the government is offering a credit to people who buy new cars that are more fuel efficient than the cars they are currently driving. The credit is applied as the payment for the trade in of their old car to a dealership. Goals are twofold:

1. Stimulate the economy by helping car makers recover from the recession.
2. Push americans toward more fuel effficient vehicles, trying to improve the overall efficiency of the US driving fleet.

Both of these are ideas I am pretty OK with. The economy needs some help and I am always in favor of reduced buring of carbon fuels. So far, so good.

However, there are two aspects of the program that bug me. First, part of the requirements of the program is that the dealership send the traded in car to a certified salvage yard for destruction/parting out. Second, there requirements/eligibility for the program is pretty weak, meaning the actual improvement on fuel efficiency isn't going to be that great.

Point 1: There are some used cars out there that yes, probably need to be off the road. However, there are a lot of used vehicles that are still practical, drivable vehicles for people. Part of conservation is using the resources we have to their maximum benefit. Don't throw out a pair of pants that has a hole, patch the hole. Don't throw away food that is still good, eat it for lunch tomorrow. By the same token, we should use cars longer and reduce the number of new cars on the road. Save energy and materials by not manufacturing so many new cars while we still have viable cars available.

This isn't well (or at all) researched on my part, so the tradeoff may be worth it, but I always wanted to place a moratorium (5 year? 10 year?) on new car sales in the US, just to give us a chance to "use up" all the used ones that are around, then start over fresh with new, higher efficiency vehicles.

Point 2: This is the part I really don't like. For different categories of vehciles, there are minimum MPG improvements that have to be met for a new purchase to qualify for the credit. You can qualify for a 3500 or a 4500 dollar credit. Bigger MPG improvement = bigger credit.

To get the 4500 credit for a car, your new car must be 10 MPG more efficient than your old car. That is good. I like this so far. Instead of 18 MPG, you have to get 28. That is a pretty dramatic improvement and goes where we need to be.

To get the 3500 credit for a car, the improvement only has to be 4 MPG. Well...it is improvement, but not too much. Not the real frustrating part though.

You move down the categories to Light Duty Trcuk (which, if I am reading everything correctly, includes the Yukon your "suburban neighbor who has never left the asphalt" bought to so they could have a big, cool, SUV. To get the credit, the new vehicle must have a MPG rating of 18. 18??? Seems like we don't need to be doing anything that promotes 18 MPG vehicles. Now someone can trade in their old SUV gas guzzler for a brand spanking new gas guzzling SUV to drive to work.

I'd have to research a bit more...there may be some more redeeming characteristics to the program that I am missing, but for now I am a fan of the idea, not necasarrily the implementation.

It also makes me sad to think that if I took advantage of this program, the wagon would get smushed. Maybe I can find someone to buy it for 4500 instead, althought the KBB is well below that and my little run ins with A. overzealous drainage ditches and B. the bumper of a ford focus have done nothing to improve the value. I'll have to think about it for awhile.

Thus ends Daniel's longest post to date.

I have internet

Now my house has internet. It is nice. What is really cool is that I got AT&Ts Fast Access Direct DSL.

The Direct part is the best, b/c I have DSL WITHOUT a home phone line, so I am only paying for the DSL, not a phone for Telemarketers to harass. That makes me happy.

And now it is time for bed.

Day is done, it was long.

It has been a long, fairly trying day. But, I now own a house and I at least have most of my junk in some form or another sort of in the house. And now I am going to bed.

Update on the house

After signing lots of documents and other such stuff, the home inspection is done and the closing date is set for May 21.

If you click on this link, you can sort of see some info on the house, including some pictures.

In other news, we just changed the hours at Jungle Quest, we are now open from noon to 8, which means I get some more time in the mornings but I don't get back from work until late. Still trying to decide if I like the new hours or not.

And finally, in an attempt to trim my beard, things got a little crazy and we ended up shaving it off. I am kind of sad, I don't think I was quite ready for it to go yet, but it is just hair and it will grow back if I decide I want it to.

And then tonight...

I sent an email with scanned copies of my signature on an offer sheet for 6402 Shortleaf Place.

Thursday, April 16, 2009

Oh man...

I just sent an email to a real estate sort of person saying "I think we should figure out what I should offer for this house."

That is scary.

For Beth

To alleviate sadness number 1, I hereby post again.

When I lived in Boulder, there was a gold Subaru Brat that lived across the street from Luaren's house. Our family, via Beth, has a special connection to Brats, so I noticed it immediately. At some point sometime, the older fellow who lived there was out in the street at the same time I was and I asked him about the car. He let me drive it around the block, which was pretty cool.

My First Post

Ben caved first, and it has been awhile, so I don't feel bad starting a blog.

Several events have happened recently that I thought someone out there might want to know about, but didn't want to call/write everyone to tell them all about it. I thought about it a bit and realized that is what blogs are for, so here I go.

Events that caused me to start a blog.

1. I saw the shuttle launch. Turns out 150 miles isn't too far away when to see things when two massive solid state boosters go off. It was really cool, like a slow moving shooting start going the wrong direction.

2. Lauren and I ate salads that were mostly composed of mizuna and arugula that we grew in our tiny garden in our backyard. Kind of cool to go out, clip off some leaves, and eat them for dinner.

3. I made a cool display thing for work. It is like those science fair displays you used in middle school, except it is made of 2x4s, door hinges, lattice, leftover climbing wall and barrier netting. It looks pretty cool, weighs quite a bit, and hopefully will get more customers to come to Jungle Quest.

4. I went to yoga classes. It is tough, because I have "the flexibility of a dead tree" (that is what Shad Miller told me when he was coaching me in hurdles). But, I usually feel better after and it helps my back, so I am going to try to keep going.

I think that was a pretty good first post for a blog. It may be the last, we'll see, but now I officially have a blog. Welcome to the new world.
